The Vineyard Workers | Bible Story
Jesus travelled to Jerusalem with his disciples, and many people followed him. As they walked along, Peter said the disciples had all left their homes and families to follow him. Jesus told him that those who had left everything would be rewarded a hundredfold in heaven.
However, many of the last on earth will be the first in heaven, and many of the first here will be the last there, he added. Then he told them the parable of the vineyard workers.
The vineyard owner needed some workers, so he hired some labourers, offering them a silver coin for the day’s work. After three hours, he thought they would need more workers, so he called a few more. Some more workers were called in after six hours. At the end of the day, the owner told his steward to pay each man a silver coin.
The workers who had come in the morning were angry. “Why should the others who have worked less than us be paid an equal amount?” they asked the owner. “Have I not paid you what I promised?” asked the owner. “Why does it upset you if I am equally good to all the workers?” Jesus explained that, in God’s eyes, everyone was of equal value and worth.
But as they went along, he called his disciples aside and told them they were going to Jerusalem, where he would be betrayed by the chief priests and scribes, who would condemn him to death. They would throw him before the crowds to be mocked, beaten, and crucified. But he would arise on the third day.
The disciples were upset but didn’t know what to say or do. They followed Jesus as he continued to speak to people and heal them along the way.
