The Transfiguration of Jesus | Bible Story
Jesus traveled to Caesaria Philippi with his disciples. As they walked along, he asked them who they said he was. They said some thought he was John the Baptist, and some Elijah or one of the other prophets.
“But what do you think I am?” asked Jesus. And Peter answered, “Thou art the Christ!” Jesus told them not to say so to anyone, for he would suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes. He would be killed and then rise three days later. This shocked the disciples, and Peter said he must not speak such things.
Jesus reprimanded Peter, stating, “You are only concerned about yourself!” Why are you stopping me from carrying out the work of the Lord?
He called everyone present to follow him only if they were willing to share the burden he carried. This is because he would lose his life for the glory of God, his Father. After six days, Jesus took Peter, James, and John to Mount Hermon. He was transformed into a shining being, his face and clothes radiant with light. The glowing white light that shone from Jesus dazzled the eyes of his three disciples. They saw Moses and Elijah descend to stand beside Jesus.
Suddenly, the sky was overcast, and a voice said, “This is my beloved son.” Hear him!
Then the vision vanished. They stood there with only Jesus before them. He led them back down the mountain. On the way, he told them not to speak of the vision they had seen till he rose again after his death. The dazed disciples looked at each other, wondering what Jesus could mean when he spoke of dying and rising from the dead!
