Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell wrote a children’s picture book in 2005, which was illustrated by Co Steinwart. The book provides a Christmas-themed story in rhyme about how Santa Claus determines who is naughty and who is nice. It recounts elves visiting children from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve before returning to the North Pole until the following holiday season. A hardbound picture book and a little scout elf are included in the Elf on the Shelf keepsake package. Carol Aebersold created a family ritual for her twin girls, Chanda Bell and Christa Pitts, in Georgia, according to the authors.
Santa’s best companion is the elf on the shelf, often known as St. Nick. Santa’s “scout elves” hide in people’s homes to keep an eye on things in this fable. After everyone has gone to bed, the scout elf returns to the North Pole to report on the good and terrible things that have happened over the day to Santa. Each morning, the scout elf returns from the North Pole and hides before the household awakens. The scout elf engages in an ongoing game of hide and seek with the family by hiding in a different location around the house each morning.
