Jesus Is Born | Jesus Story
Joseph of Nazareth was a descendant of the house of David. He had heard about the angel’s visitation to Mary, whom he was betrothed. It was said that she would give birth to the Son of God. He wondered if it was right for him to marry her.
He received his answer from an angel who came to him in a dream. The angel reassured him that he was right to marry Mary, who had received the grace of God and was blessed. The son should be called Jesus, for he shall save his people from sins. This was the fulfillment of an old prophecy. When Joseph awoke, he felt comforted. He married Mary and was very happy.
The Roman Empire was ruled by Augustus Caesar. He wanted taxes to be collected from all the people, and people had to return to their places of origin to pay their taxes.
Being from the House of David, Joseph had to go to Bethlehem, his place of origin. And he had to take Mary, his wife too. She was expecting her baby soon, so he put her on a donkey so she would not be tired of walking.
When they reached Bethlehem, they found that all the inns were full. The time for Mary to give birth to the child drew near, and a place had to be found quickly. The only shelter they could find was in an old stable on the outskirts of the town.
In such humble surroundings, Jesus was born at night. Mary wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him warmly in the hay in a manger. It was the only cradle available for the sacred child.
