How to Draw Turtle – Step by Step
Turtles are a protected species in the United States and many other countries. They are also indigenous to North America, where they can be found throughout much of Mexico and Central America as well. Interestingly enough, the modern turtle actually evolved from a long-extinct relative of the alligator.
Turtle is a reptile from the family Cheloniidae, which comprises of four extant species: the box turtle, the Chinese soft-shelled turtle, the Caribbean slider turtle, and the American snapping turtle. They are classified in the superfamily Tortoidea, alongside Testudines (turtles), Crocodilians (crocodiles), and Pseudosuchians (genus Mesosuchus). In terms of body shape, turtles have elongated bodies with narrow heads and necks. Their limbs are short and stocky with digits that are webbed. The shell of a turtle is made up of five anterior vertebrae and 12 posterior ones.
In general, turtles spend their lives on land but can also reside in water if they need to. They are herbivorous although they are capable of eating small amounts of meat. Some common behaviors seen in turtles include nesting, swimming, cryptoprobing for food, and basking in the sun.
