What is known is that he was born into an influential family in Lower Baroda region in western India. He had two sisters and a brother, all of whom also became illustrious public figures in their own right.
Ambedkar’s parents were deeply religious people and they passed down their faith to their son. Ambedkar later said that he grew up influenced by the principles of Ahimsa (nonviolence), Dharma (duty), Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of law-bandhi (cooperation) and Aryan tradition. He also developed a great admiration for British rule and always considered himself an Indian patriot.
In 1911, at the age of 20, Ambedkar married Savitribai Dasi, who was just 13 years old at the time. The marriage was arranged by her father and it was not a happy one. Ambedkar often referred to her as his “prisoner” due to the fact that she remained in their house to be chained when he was on the high seas exploring opportunities in Australia, South Africa, Palestine and other countries.
According to Ambedkar, she was generally ill from the effects of hard work that she had put up with for him, but also due to peptic ulcers. The couple had three children: Dhananjay (later a noted film director), Ramabai (who died at the age of five) and Ambedkar’s favourite child, Mehera (died from natural causes at the age of 16).
In 1922 Mehera became an activist for better treatment of women, working with Mahila Samhita and later becoming a member of Vidya Sabha, an Indian women literature and women’s rights movement.
The couple separated in 1925. From 1925, Mehera travelled to many parts of the world, including Europe, South Africa and Canada among others. She suffered bouts of ill-health and had some financial difficulties, on one occasion being forced to pawn her jewellery “with the consent of the anganwadi”.
