Narendra Modi was born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, India, to a family of grocers. He grew up helping his father run the family business, and he later worked as a tea seller and bus conductor.

He graduated from Delhi University with a degree in political science, and he later joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). He quickly rose through the ranks of the party, and he was appointed chief minister of Gujarat in 2001. He was re-elected in 2002, 2007, and 2012. In 2014, he was elected prime minister of India.

In his early adulthood, Modi traveled across India and worked in a number of different jobs, including as a tea seller, a bus conductor, and a pratham sevak in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He also spent some time in the Himalayan town of Leh, working as a cabinetmaker.

Modi’s Political Career Modi began his political career in the RSS, a right-wing Hindu nationalist organization. He joined the RSS in 1954, when he was just four years old. He participated in the RSS’ annual training camps and became a full-time worker for the RSS in 1971.
