The Good Guest | Bible Story
One day, while it was the Sabbath, Jesus stopped in the house of a Pharisee. Many guests gathered outside the house, including a man who suffered from dropsy or sleeping sickness.
Everyone wondered if it was right to heal someone on the Sabbath, as it was said that no work must be done on that day.
“If your ox or ass falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take him out?” Jesus asked as he proceeded to cure the man of his illness.
Then Jesus spoke to them about pride and humility, for the Pharisee and his friends were important people in the community and proud too.
“If you are invited to a wedding feast,” he said, “don’t rush to take the best room or seat.” You may have to move to a less critical room or seat for someone more important than you. You will feel humiliated.” “It is always wiser to take the humbler seat or room,” he added. “Then perhaps the host will call you to a more important seat, and you will feel happy for the people will honour you.
In God’s kingdom, the humble will be raised higher. “If you have to invite people to a feast,” said Jesus, “don’t invite friends, relatives, rich neighbours, and powerful people.” They will repay you by inviting you to a feast too. Invite the poor, the maimed, the blind, and the hurt people, the beggars. Because they will bless you but cannot repay you. Your reward will be given by God!”
Jesus taught people that they should not look for immediate rewards but wait for the blessings that come from heaven for the good that they do.
